THE INFLUENCE OF EXTENSIVE READING ON THE ATTITUDE AND CRITICAL COMPREHENSION OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDENTS
Author: Lidia Govea Piña
ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this cuasi-experimental study was to analyze in what way
extensive reading influences on the attitude and critical comprehension of short
stories in students of English as a foreign language. A sample of 42 students was non
randomly chosen out of a population of 63 subjects studying EFL at the Universidad
Nacional Experimental “Francisco de Miranda” in Coro, Falcon state, Venezuela. The
sample completed two questionnaires, one on attitude towards EFL reading and one
on critical comprehension of short stories. Then, the experimental group received a
24 hour program of extensive reading during which each student had to complete a
questionnaire on extensive reading after each story read; while the control group was
isolated from the independent variable. The results showed that the program
promoted positive attitudes towards EFL reading (3,01 vs. 3,66) and increased the
critical level of comprehension of short stories (1,87 vs. 2,18), confirming the
experimental hypothesis. Extensive reading is recommended as a productive way of
improving students’ attitude and comprehension levels.
Keywords: extensive reading, attitude towards reading, critical reading
comprehension, short stories, English as a foreign language.
